‘I accept your choice, and, in particular, now concede that Mr Kibaki will be President’ These are the words of Uhuru Kenyatta.

The day is 30th December 2002, three days after a contentious election in which Uhuru and Moi have been shown dust by Mwai Kibaki, whose camp was led by one Raila Odinga.

But there is someone I wish to introduce in this story, his name is William Ruto; then a first time MP and Cabinet Minister, Ruto is the only KANU politician who stands beside Uhuru as he concedes the bitter loss at Serena Hotel.

All senior KANU Politicians had already decamped to NARC by the time Uhuru conceded defeat, even before the results were officially made.

Uhuru might have lost the elections, but he found a true friend, a colleague, a confidant and a man who believed he could be President one day; his name was William Ruto.

The two went on to take the leadership of KANU in 2003, with Uhuru as Chairman and Ruto as Secretary General. They later part ways as Ruto joins ODM but as they say, fate brings them together at the ICC.

One of the reasons why ICC cases failed terribly, is because Moreno Ocampo tried to paint Uhuru and Ruto as enemies who viciously attacked each other with impunity.

Uhuru and Ruto are not your average politicians. Theirs is a friendship that has withstood the greatest of storms. It was forged during those dark times after 2002 and certified after they were named as ICC suspects.

Some people might think that Raila has split these buddies, but the truth is that Raila had to agree that he will not vie in 2022 as part of the handshake deal.

Even now, when the war on corruption takes center stage, Uhuru and Ruto have decided to make it look like they’re fighting. But that is just to divert the attention from the massive looting in government.
