Representatives of both players are said to be asking for exorbitant wages for their clients to agree to stay at United beyond this season.

Herrera is understood to want to more than double his current weekly wage of £120,000-a-week, while Mata, on around £140,000-a-week, is also looking for a significant hike to extend.

While United say they want both to stay, they believe the wage demands put forward are not reflective of their status as, effectively, squad players going forward, with the Reds set to make one, possibly two, marquee midfield signings this summer.

United are unwilling to meet those demands for Herrera and Mata, 29 and 30 respectively, which has led to a stalemate in talks with their camps.

Old Trafford sources have indicated Herrera’s representatives are asking for a contract extension towards the higher end of United’s pay scale, something the club are unwilling to do.

United’s willingness to pay Alexis Sanchez £500,000-a-week has led to players demanding bigger salaries because of what the Chile star is earning.

While Mata’s camp are understood to be asking for less than Herrera, United are adamant both players will need to lower their wage demands if extensions are going to be agreed.

Paris Saint-Germain are interested in signing Herrera, if he cannot agree a new deal with United, while there is interest in Mata from Premier League clubs and those overseas.

While United are willing to pay De Gea £350,000-a-week, almost double his current £200,000-a-week salary, the 28-year-old’s representatives want closer to £500,000-a-week, which has proved a stumbling block to an extension being agreed.Real Madrid are closely monitoring De Gea’s contract predicament with United, with their first-choice keeper Thibaut Courtois struggling for form and the 13-time European Cup winners looking for a replacement.

De Gea has been a long-term target for Real and almost joined them on transfer deadline day in the summer of 2015, before a faulty fax machine caused the collapse of his proposed move to the Bernabeu.

Zinedine Zidane’s return to Real is set to see a radical overhaul of the squad this summer, with De Gea one of their targets, which is why United are so desperate to agree terms with their prized asset, to ensure they keep hold of him.
