EACC now calls for life imprisonment for corrupt leaders

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has called for law formulation that will see individuals found guilty of corruption sentenced to life imprisonment.

The EACC proposed on Thursday, March 21, that the National Assembly comes up with the legislation which will assist in the fight against corruption.

Eliud Wabukala said the only way to deal with corruption is to ensure there is severe punishment for those found culpable.

The commissions’ Chairperson, Eliud Wabukala was speaking in Nakuru when he said the only way to deal with corruption is to ensure there is severe punishment for those found culpable.

“I support the idea that we impose a life sentence in prison for anybody found (guilty) of corruption,” said Wabukala.

“I think the sentences we have are so lenient that Kenyans who are getting corruption know very well that ten years is a short time, they will come out and enjoy their proceeds,” he added.

Wabukala also noted that the commission’s strategic plan for the year is to ensure the country is run through integrity, He also called for proper governance structures in place to avert corruption and save public property and funds.

He further warned that the commission will continue to ensure that those who steal public property and funds do not have room to enjoy them.

Prior reports show EACC was reported to have averted the loss of public funds estimated at KSh 7.4 billion in 2018/2019 Financial Year. The commission’s report also indicated that a total of 11 properties amounting to KSh 780 million were recovered within the same period.

The recovered assets were handed over as the anti-graft body said it had taken a proactive approach to prevent graft by doing Corruption Risk Assessments to seal corruption loopholes.
