Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has said that the appointment of Davis Moyes as Red Devils boss was a surprise to him.
Moyes was appointed by Manchester United in 2013 to replace the retired Sir Alex Ferguson who spent more than two decades at the club and won many trophies.
He said: “I think Moyes was a bit of a surprise choice but his record at Everton over ten years was great. He got them into the Champions League, finished in the top half almost every year and did a fantastic job.
“I think what Manchester United were trying to do at the time was bring someone in who had longevity in them as a manager.”
While Sir Alex Ferguson and Louis Van Gaal had very different fortunes at Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney has revealed something shocking about the legendary managers.
Ferguson won the Champions League twice, the Premier League 13 times and five FA Cups with the club before retiring in 2013.
Since his retirement, the club have had five managers, with Dutchman Louis van Gaal spending two years between 2014 and 2016. The former Ajax boss won the English FA Cup in 2016 before he was sacked.
Rooney has now claimed that Van Gaal was tactically better than Ferguson.
“He (Van Gaal) was tactically the best I have worked with – in terms of setting you up in a shape defensively and everyone knowing their roles,” Rooney told TalkSPORT .
“It was just about getting the attacking side right as well as the defensive side. He won a few trophies but it didn’t pan out the way everyone would have hoped.”
United have somewhat struggled since Ferguson’s departure, with all the managers that came after him failing to live up to the expectations of the fans.
Mourinho has been the most successful United boss since Ferguson retired. The Portuguese won the Europa League and the League Cup before he was fired last December
