Mr Ouko said said in a qualified audit opinion of the State Department tabled in Parliament last evening that the amount was on June 29, 2018 transferred by the department to the National Sports Fund. The funds were meant to cater for the MPs’ expenses during the last two weeks of the games (July 1 to July 17, 2018).

Mr Ouko said the payments were based on a request from the Clerk of the National Assembly through letters on June 14 and June 18, 2018. Mr Ouko observed that the members of the National Assembly serve under the Parliamentary Service Commission and all their expenses should be paid from there. There was public uproar after Kenyans learnt that a delegation of 20 MPs had travelled to Russia for the World Cup games. Fourteen members of the National Assembly and six Senators travelled to Russia at the taxpayers’ expense.
