Who will awaken Kenyan Football’s sleeping giant?

Gor Mahia’s qualification into the quarter finals of the CAF confederations Cup made even those not heavily engaged in the sport appreciate or take note of this incredible achievement. Simply put, Gor Mahia are the best team on Kenyan soil by a mile which leads to the question; why are AFC Leopards not getting even close to this level of success despite being the second most successful team in the land?

AFC Leopards struggles and troubles have been vastly documented over the years but never have we seen the club make any serious attempt at fixing the mess that threatens to cripple this prestigious club. The constant fixing of round pegs in square holes only makes the situation even worse but we are now at a point where someone needs to stand up and save the Leopards from eternal mediocrity.

For starters, the management team needs a complete overhaul, the club needs people who are invested in making the actions on the pitch better instead of their pockets! We always see constant changes in playing and coaching staff but rarely does the same occur in the management structure or personnel. Antony Kimani’s appointment is the latest in a series of weak attempts at change.Make no mistake about Kimani’s qualities, he has a very good football brain and will go on to make very good coaching career but whether that is at the Den remains highly doubtful.

There have been others who were maybe better than him but failed, miserably! Look at it this way, Leopards have possibly the largest fan base in the country, very good finances and with the ability to attract top talents from around the country and even beyond but are currently deep in a relegation dog fight with the likes of Mount Kenya United. That is simply unacceptable!

Kenyan football needs AFC Leopards to do far much better than their current situation, we need them challenging Gor Mahia for the title, we need a mashemeji derby that is not just another straight forward win for K’ogallo. Someone needs to step up and be counted as the man who awakened the sleeping giant that is AFC Leopards, who will it be?
