Two MPs forced to ‘vomit’ what they swallowed last year

It was indeed a nice experience for the Members of the National Assembly who travelled to Russia last year to have a world cup experience, but has everything gone well for them? Well, the state might be at some of these lawmakers’ necks demanding what they already swallowed. Two MPs who were paid about Sh2.5 million towards their expenses during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Games in Russia could be made to refund the amount.

Auditor-General Edward Ouko wants the Department of Sports to pursue a refund of Sh2,461,872 irregularly requested and paid to the two unnamed MPs from the Clerk of the National Assembly.

Mr Ouko said said in a qualified audit opinion of the State Department tabled in Parliament last evening that the amount was on June 29, 2018 transferred by the department to the National Sports Fund.

The funds were meant to cater for the MPs’ expenses during the last two weeks of the games (July 1 to July 17, 2018).

Mr Ouko said the payments were based on a request from the Clerk of the National Assembly through letters on June 14 and June 18, 2018.

Mr Ouko observed that the members of the National Assembly serve under the Parliamentary Service Commission and all their expenses should be paid from there.

There was public uproar after Kenyans learnt that a delegation of 20 MPs had travelled to Russia for the World Cup games. Fourteen members of the National Assembly and six Senators travelled to Russia at the taxpayers’ expense.

Do you support Edward Ouko’s move to demand the money back?
