A treble is what Cristiano Ronaldo lacks and in association football it is achieved when a club team wins three trophies in a single season. A ‘continental treble’ involves winning the club’s national league competition, main national cup competition and a continental trophy.
A ‘domestic treble’ involves winning three national competitions—normally the league title, the primary cup competition and one secondary competition.
This list includes clubs who have won their country’s top tier league and the primary cup competition (the double), in addition to the major continental tournament, all within a single season. This was first achieved in 1967 by Celtic, winning the Scottish Football League, Scottish Cup and European Cup.
In total, seven European clubs have achieved the feat since 1967. Spanish club Barcelona is the only club to have won this treble twice.
CELTIC FC 1966-67
Season 1966–67 is considered Celtic’s annus mirabilis. The club won every competition they entered: the Scottish League, the Scottish Cup, the Scottish League Cup, the Glasgow Cup, and the European Cup; scoring a world record total of 196 goals in the process.
Celtic have won the Scottish league championship 49 times, most recently in 2017–18, which was their seventh consecutive championship. They have won the Scottish Cup 38 times and the Scottish League Cup 18 times.
The club’s greatest season was 1966–67, when Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup, also winning the Scottish league championship, the Scottish Cup, the League Cup and the Glasgow Cup. Celtic also reached the 1970 European Cup Final and the 2003 UEFA Cup Final, losing in both.
AFC AJAX 1971-1972
Ajax has historically been one of the most successful clubs in the world. According to the IFFHS, Ajax were the seventh-most successful European club of the 20th century and The World’s Club Team of the Year in 1992.
According to German magazine Kicker, Ajax were the second-most successful European club of the 20th century. The club is one of the five teams that has earned the right to keep the European Cup and to wear a multiple-winner badge; they won consecutively in 1971–1973.
In 1972, they completed the continental treble by winning the Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, and the European Cup. It also won the first organized UEFA Super Cup in 1972 against Glasgow Rangers (played in 1973).
Ajax’s last international trophies were the 1995 Intercontinental Cup, 1995 UEFA Super Cup and the 1995 Champions League, where they defeated Milan in the final; they lost the 1996 Champions League final on penalties to Juventus. In 1995, Ajax was crowned as World Team of the Year by World Soccer magazine.
PSV EINDHOVEN 1987-1988
PSV’s history contains two golden eras revolving around the UEFA Cup victory in 1978 and the 1987–88 European Cup victory as part of the seasonal treble in 1988.
The team has won the Eredivisie 24 times, the KNVB Cup nine times and the Johan Cruyff Shield ten times. Currently (as of Nov 2018), PSV is 39th on the UEFA club coefficients ranking.
Throughout the years, PSV established itself as a stepping stone for future world class players like Ruud Gullit, Ronald Koeman, Romário, Ronaldo, Phillip Cocu, Jaap Stam, Jisung Park, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Arjen Robben.
Manchester United 1998-1999
Manchester United have won more trophies than any other club in English football, with a record 20 League titles, 12 FA Cups, 5 League Cups and a record 21 FA Community Shields. United have also won three UEFA Champions Leagues, one UEFA Europa League, one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup and one FIFA Club World Cup.
In 1998–99, the club became the first in the history of English football to achieve the continental European treble. By winning the UEFA Europa League in 2016–17, they became one of five clubs to have won all three main UEFA club competitions.
BARCELONA 2008-09/ 2014-15
In 2009, Barcelona became the first Spanish club to win the continental treble consisting of La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League,
and also became the first Spanish football club to win six out of six competitions in a single year, by also winning the Spanish Super Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup. In 2011, the club became European champions again and won five trophies.
This Barcelona team, which won 14 trophies in just 4 years under Pep Guardiola, is considered by some in the sport to be the greatest team of all time. Barcelona became the first European club in history to achieve the continental treble twice.
INTERNAZIONALE 2009-10
Football Club Internazionale Milano, commonly referred to as Internazionale or simply Inter and colloquially known as Inter Milan outside Italy,[8][9] is an Italian professional football club based in Milan, Lombardy. Inter is the only Italian club to have never been relegated from the top flight.
The 2009–10 season was Football Club Internazionale Milano’s 101st in existence and 94th consecutive season in the top flight of Italian football.
Inter had the greatest season in their history completing a historic Treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and UEFA Champions League, becoming the sixth European club to complete the treble and the only Italian club to achieve this feat to date.
BAYERN MUNICH 2012-13
The 2012–13 FC Bayern Munich season was the 114th season in the club’s history and the 48th consecutive season in the top flight of German football, the Bundesliga, since the promotion of the team from the Regionalliga Süd in 1965.
Before the start of the season, Bayern signed Xherdan Shaqiri, Dante, Claudio Pizarro, Mitchell Weiser, Tom Starke and Mario Mandžukić. Bayern also added holding midfielder Javi Martínez after the first week of the Bundesliga season at the transfer deadline. The club started the season with a nine-match winning streak.
The club would end the season claiming the Treble, winning the Bundesliga, the UEFA Champions League and the DFB-Pokal. Bayern are the first German club to achieve the Treble and are the third European Club to complete the Treble in the last five seasons and seventh ever in European Club competition.
Despite losing to Genoa on Sunday, Cristiano Ronaldo and Juventus are cruising to another Italian title – and can break a few records in the process.
