Woman in agony as only son kidnapped, Ksh.15M ransom demanded

A 12-year-old boy was on Sunday evening kidnapped by unknown people at Rodi Kopany trading centre in Homa Bay County.

Jack Ochieng’ Omondi, a Class Six pupil at Rodi Kopany Primary School, was reportedly sent to buy meat from the market center in the afternoon not to return home.

According to his mother, Lilian Omondi, she received a call on Monday evening from an unknown person demanding for money in order to release the boy.

“We sent him (Jack) at around 2p.m but, when he had not returned by 4pm, we started looking around for him. On Monday at 5.08pm, I received a call from a strange number notifying me that they have my son and will release him after I have given them Ksh.15 million,” said Ms. Omondi.

“At around 6pm, the person called again and – upon inquiring of their whereabouts – they hang up the phone. The person was, however, close to the child since I heard him say ‘Mama’ before the kidnapper ordered him to stop talking and ended the call.”

The distraught mother, who is a house help, has since recorded the matter at Homa Bay Police Station and is now appealing for help from members of the public since Jack is her only son.

Ken Owuo, Ms. Omondi’s employer, expressed concern about a group of people in the area who had developed the habit of kidnapping people’s children and soliciting for ransom.

He further claimed that his family members live in fear, adding that some unknown people have been trailing them for the past week.

Confirming the kidnapping incident, Homa Bay sub-county Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss Joseph Tuksho said they are currently carrying out investigations.
