Lukaku sent for MRI scan on Belgium duty to hand Man Utd injury scare

Romelu Lukaku has undergone an MRI scan on his troublesome foot injury on international duty having missed Belgium’s training session on Monday.

The Manchester United forward linked up with Roberto Martinez’s squad despite missing United’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Wolves  at Molineux on Saturday evening.

But he failed to take part in the squad’s initial preparations for their opening Euro 2020 qualifier against Russia on Brussels on Thursday, which will be followed up by a trip to face Cyprus in Nicosia on Sunday.

Lukaku – who has scored 45 goals in 79 appearances for his country – has been in fine form for United in recent weeks, scoring braces in the wins over Crystal Palace, Southampton and Paris Saint-Germain.

Should Lukaku not be fit enough to take on Russia, then his place in the side could be taken by either one of Crystal Palace pair Christian Benteke or Michy Batshuayi, or Liverpool’s Divock Origi.

Former Tottenham midfielder Mousa Dembele and Paris Saint-Germain right-back Thomas Meunier have pulled out of Martinez’s squad for both qualifiers.
