Kilifi County Introduces Cocoa Farming to boost agricultural sector

Kilifi County is set to introduce Cocoa Farming in the spirit of boosting the agricultural sector.

This comes after the County Government of Kilifi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on regenerative sustainable agriculture with Kilimo Sasa Fund (KSF) and the Community Agriculture Resources Development Programme (CARDEP).

The project, Cocoa for New and Sustainable Livelihoods (CONSUL), will see the introduction of organic Cocoa farming in Kilifi County as a viable alternative to commercial farming and improve the livelihoods of local farmers.

Kingi noted that they expect their Cocoa produce to rival other Cocoa products across the world and become a reliable foreign exchange earner just like Coffee and Tea.

He also assured of their committed as a government to revamp Kilifi’s agricultural sector and diversify their economic activities.

Kilifi County is currently in the process of revamping cashew and coconut industry and the introduction of Cocoa farming will be another frontier which the residents will be able to benefit fully from.

It will also serve as a challenge to the farmers on the need to embrace new modern agricultural ventures as the county government looks to add value to their already existing agricultural produce.

Kingi also reiterated his commitment to make this project a success by facilitating centres that will be ideal in training our local farmers on organic Cocoa farming as well as facilitate the distribution of organic manure to farmers and ensure Kilifi Farmers have a ready market for their produce.
