David Moyes has revealed that Manchester United were agonisingly close to signing Gareth Bale before he left Tottenham Hotspur for Real Madrid in 2013.

The Scotsman departed Everton to take over at Old Trafford from Sir Alex Ferguson after the latter’s retirement following the 2012/13 season.

While Moyes would only spend ten months in the role after a poor debut season which he did not even finish, everything could have started so different six years ago this summer when Bale was heavily linked with the Red Devils.

United’s interest in Bale is well-documented, with the club rumoured to be courting him again, but Moyes has opened up on it further by revealing that United actually had a helicopter waiting for him as they planned to stop him leaving for Madrid.

“By the time we got to the end of the transfer window, we always thought we had a chance of getting Gareth Bale,” Moyes told beIN SPORTS.

“We hoped we could talk him out of going to Real Madrid because it was already half done.

“We had offered more money, we tried to entice him. We did (have a helicopter ready) and we tried.”

Bale instead left for Real as the Spanish giants paid a then world-record £85m fee, with the Welshman having since helped the side win the La Liga title at the end of the 2016/17 season, while he has also picked up four Champions League medals.
