Real Betis celebrate Lionel Messi’s hat trick and Ernesto Valverde reacts to the standing ovation treat to the star

Ernesto Valverde hailed “extraordinary” Lionel Messi after his hat-trick in Barcelona’s 4-1 win over Real Betis led to 55,000 opposing supporters handing him a standing ovation.

Messi scored the 51st treble of his career as Barcelona opened up a 10 point lead atop La Liga.

Messi opened the scoring with a superb freekick in the first period, before doubling the Blaugrana’s advantage before the break, putting the finishing touch to a fine team move.

He then finished the affair with the final say, magnificently chipping home goalkeeper Pau Lopez from the edge of the penalty area, his sublime effort hitting the underside of the bar on its way into the net.

That led the entirety of the Benito Villamarin to rise to hail the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

According to Valverde, the ovation awarded to Messi following his performance which included some members of the crowd bowing down – showed the esteem within which Messi is held within the game.

“Leo’s match has been extraordinary,” said Valverde. “He scored three goals and could have scored a fourth.

“It’s evidence of the player he is. Despite the opposition being on the receiving end, we are all enjoying this era of his, which is unequalled.”It’s significant that they cheer him, it’s an acknowledgement.” he added.

Messi, 31, admitted that he cannot recall ever receiving such a reception from rival fans and thanked the Betis supporters.

“To be honest no,” he responded when asked. “I don’t remember the opposition fans giving me an ovation for a goal. I’m very grateful for the response.

“We’re always treated very well when we come to this stadium.”I’m very grateful and happy for the win, which was very important.”
