Solskjaer Sends Consolation Message to United Players

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has urged Manchester United supporters not to worry about the players’ attitude following their anodyne FA Cup defeat by Wolves.

United produced what Solskjaer described as their ‘poorest performance’ from his 19 matches in caretaker charge to suffer a quarter-final elimination at Molineux, where the 2-1 reverse flattered them.

Solskjaer reverted to the tried and trusted sextet of Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford in attack but Martial and Lingard were making their first starts in over a month and Herrera returned three weeks on from the hamstring injury he sustained against Liverpool.

That ring-rust was patent as Wolves deservedly defeated United, who could also drop to sixth in the Premier League on Sunday if Chelsea beat Everton at Goodison Park. Despite the sudden gloom, Solskjaer remained upbeat about United’s chances of finishing third in the league and their upcoming Champions League quarter-final with Barcelona.

“We’re ready to go again after internationals,” Solskjaer replied when asked what his message would be to United fans. “Man United in April and May, always find our form, we can’t wait for the challenge for this and big nights like when Barcelona come, we’ve got so many highlights to look forward to.

“The players? Don’t worry about their attitude because when they come back again we’ll give it a good go.”

“It was a big step backwards,” Solskjaer said of the Wolves setback. “That’s the poorest performance since I came here, a lack of urgency forward, lack of forward passing, lack of regains, the international break sometimes come in handy and maybe now we would have loved to play again and and put it right.

“But hopefully some will have good experiences with the national teams, some will have a few days off, train hard here and get ready to push again.

“We’re in a great position in the league, got the Champions League, so very disappointing tonight we’re not in the semis.”
