When Rashid Echesa was sacked as Sports Cabinet Secretary by President Uhuru Kenyatta, a number of Kenyans argued that his sack was long overdue and as such it did not come as a surprise.
Echesa was replaced by Amina Mohammed as the curtains finally fell on his 14-month at the helm of the Sports docket.
A number of Kenyans wondered on what Echesa actually achieved during his turbulent tenure at Kencom House.
He has now come out to clearly lay down the facts on his success at the Sports docket.
Looking back at his 14-month tenure, Echesa listed Harambee Stars’ qualification to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after a 15-month absence, Kenya’s sterling performance at the 2018 World Youth Championship, and renovation of Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums as some of his achievements.
Well, he sort of tried.
Echesa has also blamed the multi-million National Sports Fund Kitty for his sack. Echesa has revealed that there was tussle for the control of the funds and that it is this that ultimately led to his sacking.
“The National Sports Fund was one of the problems (I faced). I can confirm that the first batch of the Sh4 billion (of this fund) was credited to the Sports Ministry’s account on Tuesday, a few days before I was shown the door on Friday,” he said.
