And Then there were Eight: This is what happened the last time four English teams made the UCL Quarter Finals

English teams will made up half of all the clubs involved in Friday’s Champions League quarter-final draw.

It is the first time since 2009 that four English clubs have reached the last eight, repeating the feat of 12 months previous when Manchester United went on to win the competition.

United are joined by Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham in the quarter-finals this year, with Ajax, Porto, Barcelona and Juventus completing the line-up.

It was Porto the Red Devils were pitted against in the 2009 draw.

Goals from Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez in the first leg at Old Trafford were only enough for a 2-2 draw, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s screamer in Portugal sent them through to the semis.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were joined in the last four by Arsenal, who comfortably saw off Villarreal.

The Gunners went behind in the first leg in Spain after just 10 minutes, but it would prove to be the only goal they conceded over the course of the tie.

Emmanuel Adebayor sealed a 1-1 draw before Theo Walcott, Adebayor and Robin van Persie secured a 3-0 second-leg victory and a 4-1 aggregate win.

Chelsea and Liverpool were the other two English sides through to the last eight, and they were drawn against one another at Europe’s top table.

In a classic tie, it was advantage Chelsea after the first leg at Anfield, despite Fernando Torres firing the Reds into a sixth-minute lead.

A Branislav Ivanovic brace and a strike by Didier Drogba gave the Blues a 3-1 lead to take back to the Bridge.

But Liverpool gave them a scare in west London as Fabio Aurelio and Xabi Alonso made the score level on aggregate at half-time in the second leg.

Chelsea hit back, though, through Drogba, Alex and a Frank Lampard double while second-half goals from Lucas and Dirk Kuyt for Liverpool made it 4-4 on the night and 7-5 on aggregate.

Barcelona hammered Bayern Munich 5-1 over two legs in the remaining quarter-final.

Chelsea’s reward for seeing off Liverpool was a clash against Barcelona, and a battling display in the Nou Camp sent both sides back to Stamford Bridge goalless for the second leg.

On a famous European night, Michael Essien’s ninth-minute volley seemed to be sending Chelsea into the final, but Andres Iniesta broke their hearts in stoppage time to make it 1-1 and put Barcelona through on away goals.

The match is most notably remembered for protests from Chelsea players towards referee Tom Henning Ovrebo after the game, with Didier Drogba shouting “it’s a f****** disgrace” into a television camera.

In the other semi-final, it was another all English affair as United faced Arsenal.

John O’Shea’s goal gave the Red Devils a slender 1-0 advantage after the first leg, but United proved too much for the Gunners in the return match at the Emirates.

Ji-Sung Park and a Ronaldo double put them 3-0 up on the night before a Robin van Persie consolation goal from the penalty spot made it 4-1 on aggregate.

United were bidding for back-to-back titles as they faced Barcelona in Rome – but the brilliance of Lionel Messi meant glory went to the Catalan giants.

Samuel Eto’o made it 1-0 after just 10 minutes before Messi sealed the result 20 minutes from time to win a third title for Barca.
