Nyumba Kumi members reported a case of ‘strange men’ living in one room and were arrested.
Seven Congolese nationals were on Friday arraigned before a Maralal court and charged with being in the country illegally.
The seven men were arrested on March 14, 2019, at a one-roomed house they had rented in Allamano area, Citizen Digital reports.
Suspicious residents alerted the Nyumba Kumi members about the ‘strange’ men.
In their defence, the accused said they were refugees and presented papers allegedly issued by the United Nations (UN).
Maralal Senior Resident Magistrate Abraham Gachie directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) to verify the documents.
The magistrate further directed that the accused to be remanded at Maralal Police Station until Tuesday, March 19, 2019 when the documents will have been verified.
The cases of illegal immigrants in the country are rampant with border control questioned about the matter.
