Virgil van Dijk hailed in brilliant message from Liverpool owner

Wednesday night has to go down as one of the best European nights in Liverpool’s recent history.

Following their goalless draw in the first leg at Anfield, the Reds headed to Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena knowing that they faced a tough task to reach the Champions League’s last-16.

But they made that task look fairly easy.

After Sadio Mane’s brilliant opener was cancelled out by an unfortunate own goal from Joel Matip, Jurgen Klopp’s side took control in the second period and dominated against opponents who had reached at least the last eight of this competition in seven of the previous eight seasons.

A towering header from Virgil van Dijk from James Milner’s corner made it 2-1, and then Mane struck again when he nodded in Mohamed Salah’s brilliant cross from close range.

Liverpool won’t be a team that anyone will be looking forward to facing in the quarter-finals, certainly not on this form.

And one man who was in the mood to hail his charges was Reds principal owner John W Henry.

The American took to Twitter for only the third time this year to hail the victory as “Sweet!” while also praising the efforts of the other three English teams to have reached the last four of the Champions League.

And he then took a screenshot of a tweet from Reds fan Andrew Passaro, who borrowed the old N’Golo Kante reference when he wrote: “75 per cent of the earth is covered by water, the other 25 per cent is covered by Virgil van Dijk.”

The tweet was also shared by Henry’s wife Linda Pizzuti Henry, and it is hard to argue with it at the moment!
