Nanok says 70% residents reached with relief food in media report over alarming drought

Two people have died of hunger in Turkana Central constituency, while many others face a similar fate.

A woman from Lodoket-Engol village was on March 5 found dead six kilometres from Kang’irisae centre, where she had gone to burn charcoal, which she hoped to sell to buy food

Governor Nanok has taken to twitter to reveal that he has briefed the media on drought situation in Turkana and the emergency response his government is undertaking to cushion residents from the hunger situation caused by the drought.

He further stated his government relief food assistance programme which begun on 28 February is distributing 2,500 metric tonnes of relief food comprising of 36,000 bags of maize,10,000 bags of 50kgs beans and 10,000 jerrycans of 20 litre cooking oil.

“We’ve widened our target to 805,000 residents who are under food stress that’s so far reached 70 percent,” Nanok added.

The elderly, widows, and orphans have been hit hardest by drought. The region has not received rains in the last nine months.
