For the first time since 2008-09, four English teams have advanced to the quarter-final round of the Champions League. Liverpool toppled Bayern 3-1 on Wednesday in Munich to seal their spot in the quarter-finals after holding the Bundesliga side to a scoreless draw in the opening leg.

With the loss, Bayern Munich failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign while English clubs continued their dominance in the competition this season. The Reds join Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City in the final eight, giving the Premier League half of the final eight remaining in the competition.

Their crosstown rivals, Manchester City, meanwhile, had it much more easy, smashing Schalke 10-2 on aggregate in a tie that included a 7-0 second leg victory. As a result, England will have four representatives going forward, joining Juventus, Ajax, Barcelona and Porto in the final eight.

“It is good for English football. That’s what you want,” James Milner told BT Sport following Liverpool’s win. “We don’t know who we are going to get in the next round, but we have good feelings from last year so hopefully we can carry that on and go as far as we can.”
