Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin took a thinly-veiled dig at former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata after his side’s Champions League exit. Cristiano Ronaldo’s hat-trick in Turin sent Juventus through to the quarter-finals of the competition, reversing their 2-0 defeat in Madrid a fortnight earlier.

Diego Simeone has been criticised for his tactics in Turin with Atletico failing to register a shot on target. An away goal would likely have killed the tie and Godin, in a dig at Morata who was starting in the absence of suspended Diego Costa, says Atletico were poor in attack.

‘We couldn’t find a way to hurt them,’ said Godin. ‘We defended but conceded goals. We didn’t look like scoring a goal, which was needed for the tie. ‘We weren’t surprised by Juve at all. We knew it’d be a difficult match, against tough opponents who would play. ‘They defended well and attacked well. They were careful and smart, while we couldn’t find the goal we needed.’

Morata joined Atletico in January on an 18-month loan deal from Chelsea. The Spaniard completed 90 minutes against former club Juventus but showed little sign of an understanding with strike partner Antoine Griezmann.
