The war of words between Deputy President William Ruto and his allies on one hand and Opposition chief Raila Odinga and his backers on the other does not bode well for the country.

The DP’s allies have gone ballistic in the contention that the controversial Handshake did not have his best interest, in his quest for the top seat come 2022.

Their position is the direct antithesis to that of the second group, that has asked the DP to throw more light into the missing billions meant for dam projects, with senator James Orengo threatening to have the DP record a statement with the police.

The most acerbic remarks yet emanated from Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi, who has challenged President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare if he wants a third term.

It is unacceptable that such acrimony should characterise our political discourse. For a country that emerged from an election a year ago scarred, this vitriol is unacceptable. The dividends of the Handshake are getting undermined in the process.

In the exchange of harsh words, issues are obfuscated. We urge sobriety, cessation of hostilities and a return to civility.
