Unai Emery has said that he is proud of how his Arsenal players performed in their 2-0 win over Manchester United.

The Gunners took the lead in bizarre fashion after just 12 minutes when Granit Xhaka’s speculative effort from range totally deceived the usually proficient David de Gea, who could only look on helplessly as the ball sailed into the right corner after the Spaniard had gone the wrong way.

In what was an end-to-end game at the Emirates, with both sides having the chance to score, but it was Arsenal who got the decisive goal from the spot thanks to a dubiously awarded Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang penalty, who banished the demons of last weekends spot-kick miss against Spurs to coolly slot the ball straight down the middle.

Speaking after the game, Gunners boss Unai Emery was left proud of his player’s performance, picking out goalkeeper Bernd Leno for particular praise after he denied Romelu Lukaku on at least two occasions.

“I’m very proud of our players. They gave all they could against the best team at this moment,” Emery told BBC’s MOTD.

“We were playing very competitive for 90 minutes and I think we deserved this victory. We can be happy today.

“We knew Manchester United could use different tactics but we wanted to impose our gameplan and I think we did that.

“Our goalkeeper is very important and sometimes the goalkeeper can save us and today I’m very proud of his work.”
