Nike Stadium is not the name of our new playing field; Tottenham confirms amid speculations

Tottenham Hotspurs are ready play a debut match at their new stadium after reports that the stadium will be ready any time to host matches

Tottenham Hotspur have denied suggestions that their new stadium will be called Nike Stadium. Claims on Friday morning, made on beIN Sports, suggested that the decision over naming rights for Spurs new home had been decided.

However, sources close to Tottenham have stated that that is not the case. The Twitter post from beIN, in which Richard Keys declared, “I can exclusively reveal will be called ‘The Nike Stadium'” has now been taken down.

Spurs were due to move into their new home at the start of the season but issues with the critical safety systems has seen their homecoming continually pushed back.

As such, they have continued to play at Wembley this term, having moved into English football’s national stadium at the start of the 2017-18 campaign.

But they are hoping to return to their spiritual home at White Hart Lane before the end of the season.

And Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino is still hopeful that they will be able to play their Champions League quarter-final at their new home, having progressed to the last eight with a 4-0 aggregate win over Borussia Dortmund.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s game at Southampton on Thursday, Pochettino said: “We hope yes it should be ready, should be fantastic to play Champions League in the new stadium.

“I think it’s going to be a fantastic boost for us, all the fans, the players and staff are so excited to move there. “It’s feel like our new stadium and it’s going to be one positive after eight or nine months that the people can talk about.”

It’s understood that Spurs are currently targeting the April 7 Premier League match against Brighton as the first fixture at the new 62,062-seater arena.

Haringey Council has approved parking restrictions around the stadium so that an event “with an expected attendance of 10,000 persons or more” can take place there next Saturday.
