Rashford’s Transfer Fee Rises After His Penalty Against PSG

That’s the verdict of Manchester United legend Gary Neville.

Rashford enjoyed one of the biggest highlights of his career so far as he fired United into the Champions League’s last 16 on Tuesday night.

Despite having never taken a penalty in a competitive match for United before, the 21-year-old striker stepped up to take a pressure spot-kick against Gianluigi Buffon in the 94th minute of the Red Devils’ clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, the score-line was 2-1 on the night at the Parc des Princes as Rashford stared down Buffon from 12 yards knowing that if he scored, he would make it 3-3 on aggregate and send United through.

And the England international did just that with a powerful penalty that put his team into the quarter finals of the competition for the first time in the club’s post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.

It was the 43rd club goal of Rashford’s fledgling career since bursting into United’s first team from the academy under Louis van Goal.

The front-man is on 11 goals this season and is on course to beat his best tally so far for United, having managed 13 in all competitions last season.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Rashford has seven goals and four assists in 16 matches having relished his football under the Norwegian – himself a prolific striker for the club in his playing days.

And such is Rashford’s career trajectory, ex-defender Neville believes he is capable of becoming one of the most valuable forwards in the world.

“I was shaking in the crowd for him, thinking, ‘What a moment!’ But he’s the real thing, Marcus Rashford,” Neville told beIN SPORTS of Rashford’s penalty against PSG.

“Man United – people will say they need to sign a striker [in the summer] and they probably do.

“But they’ve got, through the ranks there, he’s a £100m striker now and he could become a £150m striker. He is absolutely top class.

“Ole’s got him playing exactly where he should play, on the last line, challenging the space in behind.

“It was a huge moment for him because they’re the moments actually that you grow from.

“Even if he missed tonight, it would’ve been a moment that he could’ve said, ‘Well I stood up there.’

“He scored and he’s took a big moment. He hit it hard, he was short [with his run up], he wasn’t nervous about it despite the long delay, players coming towards him. All the things you would expect.

“He did everything right and I have to say, he’s turning into a brilliant, brilliant player.”

Solskjaer also hailed Rashford’s display in the French capital.

He said: “Normally Paul [Pogba] takes the penalties. Rashford is 21 and there was pressure on the boy but there were no nerves whatsoever.

“Fearless. Him and Rom [Lukaku] were fantastic.”
