The handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga a year ago seems to have dealt a big blow to opposition politics.

Whereas many had hoped that the vibrant opposition would help put the government on its toes, many of the legislators allied to the opposition chief have hailed the bold move.

Though many opposition leaders who had teamed up with Raila Odinga in the 2017 general elections cried foul for being shortchanged in the handshake the murmurs have now gone cold.

The Nasa principals Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetangula and Musalia Mudavadi are finding it hard to champion the opposition course.

Opposition legislators who were seen as the foot soldiers of their principals were quick to affirm their endorsement on the handshake.

Some however hold a different opinion feeling the handshake has weakened the opposition and the powers to keep the government in check.

Even though questions still abound as to the finer details of the Uhuru-Raila pact, some of the issues believed to be agreed upon between the two include ending ethnic antagonism, enforcing national ethos, inclusivity, devolution, finding solutions to divisive elections, security, corruption, shared prosperity and responsibility.

The handshake many say will resolve the deep-seated ethnic suspicions that have characterized the country’s politics for long.

The opposition legislators believe the handshake had reawaked Kenya’s zeal in fighting graft which they say is partly to blame for the high voltage politics.
