Gareth Southgate has revealed why Rashford was the only man to take that penalty

On Wednesday, Manchester United made history beating PSG 3-1 at Parc des Princes and becoming the first ever team to proceed to another round of the Champions League after losing 2-0 a first leg game at home.

It was Marcus Rashford who converted from the spot in the stoppage time for the win. The attacker stepped up to the ball with a cool head and made a deadly shot. In fact, it was the first ever penalty in a competitive game the 21-year-old took in his 159 appearances for the club.

Thus, England boss Gareth Southgate has revealed to talkSPORT there was no other man who could have taken it:

“He’s a player we’ve known was going to be a top talent as soon as we worked with him, not just because of his ability but because of his mentality and his personality.

“He wants to keep improving, he wants to learn from every situation, and Wednesday night epitomised what he’s about. He has the nerve to be a big player and we are seeing that on the biggest stage. These experiences will help him develop and give him huge confidence.

“I saw some people thinking Lukaku should have stepped up, he didn’t have a chance! Marcus had the ball as soon as it had been given.

“We put him on five minutes from time in the Colombia game to take a penalty because we knew he was one of our best and he showed that again.”
