Atletico Madrid joins the race to sign Ajax Star who Demolished Real Madrid

Matthijs de Ligt caught the eye in Ajax’s stunning 4-1 demolition of Real Madrid and Tuesday and city rivals Atletico are eyeing a summer move for the player, according to reports in Spain.

The 19-year-old is Ajax captain and has been heralded as one of the most exciting young players in European football

It appears Atletico boss Diego Simeone, according to a report in Marca, is determined to land the player as a replacement for Diego Godin, who looks set to depart.

Atletico centre back Lucas Hernandez has caught the eye of bosses at Bayern Munich and 33-year-old Godin’s departure would leave Atletico short on options at centre back.

Should they aggressively go and pursue De Ligt they will not find themselves short of competition for his signature.

Having already snared Ajax starlet Frenkie de Jong for £65million, the club are also very interested in De Ligt, as are Italian champions Juventus.

De Jong’s switch to the Nou Camp could well prove pivotal but Ajax are wary too, having just booked a spot in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, of losing all of their brightest stars in the same summer.

A threat from set-pieces and already an excellent reader of the game, clubs are well aware De Ligt could be the bedrock of their defence for the next decade.

Similarly to De Jong, the teenager will not come cheap and is likely to be valued in the region of £65-70m by the Amsterdam club.
