DKirinyaga Women Representative, Purity Ngirici, on Friday dedicated lyrics by a Jamaican singer to all women on International Women’s day.

On her Twitter page, Ngirici posted lyrics from Shaggy’s song ‘Strength of a woman’ to celebrate women’s resilience and strength.

“She’s the constant wind that fills my sail, oh that woman; with her smile and her style, she’ll protect you like a child, that’s a woman….” read part of the lyrics.

The Women Representative went ahead and noted that women are the largest reservoir that remains untapped.

“To all the strong and resilient women worldwide, may the light keep shining, may we never give up, may we know them, may we be them and may we raise them,” she stated.

“Happy International Women,” she added.

The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) chair has been on the forefront in championing for the rights of women through empowerment programmes at the county level and the fight for the Two-Third Gender Bill.

Ngirici led a team of women in meeting political party leaders including ODM’s Raila Odinga, Musalia Mudavadi (ANC) and Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper) to lobby for support for the Gender Bill.

The late Sharon Otieno

The Bill, however, failed to get to a vote over lack of quorum as only 174 out of the required 233 members were in the House.

Another case study is when Sharon Otieno, a Rongo University student was murdered. Ms Ngirici urged the Government to help fight against gender-based violence among women.

“We live in a country of law and order, therefore, such heinous crimes should not be allowed to go unpunished,” she stated.

“We demand action against anyone and everyone involved in the murder against Sharon Otieno,” she continued.
