Romelu Lukaku turned to celebrate right in Angel Di Maria’s face

Manchester United’s Romelu Lukaku was on fine form last night, bagging himself a brace as the Red Devils completed a memorable late win against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16.

The victory was completed in the 94th minute when Marcus Rashford converted a penalty awarded thanks to a VAR review of Presnel Kimpembe’s handball. Once the English striker tucked the ball away, teammate Lukaku’s first cheer seemed to be directed at an Old Trafford foe.

Di Maria spent just one season at United after an expensive move in 2014. Fans remember the Argentinian for not seeming to care about playing for the club and he received a rough reception in the first leg a fortnight ago.

After the match, ESPN pundit Craig Burley ripped into Di Maria as defining PSG’s inability to get over the line in big matches.

“There’s another bottle job, Di Maria,” he said. “He swans around Ligue 1, didn’t have the stomach for the Man United gig and the Premier League.

“That’s because Man United were struggling at the time, and as a big player when you go to your club and they’re struggling, you have to roll your sleeves up even more and show your quality. And he couldn’t wait to get out of there.

“He goes to Ligue 1 and he’s swanning around and showing off the talent that we all know he’s got.

He added: “But when him and his mates are needed on a big night against a poor Man United side, they couldn’t do it.

“Why the hell are they writing cheques for this club? For what, to win Ligue 1? Because there’s no sign of them winning the Champions League. No sign whatsoever.”
