Romelu Lukaku says he was happy to step aside and let Marcus Rashford take Manchester United’s winning penalty in Wednesday’s thrilling win over PSG. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side pulled off a stunning upset in Paris, going through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League after a 3-1 victory in the French capital.

Lukaku scored twice in the first half, the first inside two minutes, but when it came to taking the stoppage-time penalty it was Rashford – who had never taken a spot-kick in a United shirt before – who stepped up.

There were shades of the weekend’s win over Southampton, when Paul Pogba took the penalty despite Lukaku being on a hat-trick, but the Belgian trusted Rashford to smash the ball home. ‘I was happy that he scored, he came to me and wanted to shoot,’ Lukaku told beIN SPORTS afterwards.

‘I said to him, “Man, it’s your time, so do it for yourself and for us” and he did it, so I’m really happy.’ On whether he prefers playing in a two alongside Rashford, Lukaku continued: ‘To be honest I like it more.

‘I like it more because Marcus and I – obviously people think I’m more a target man but the manager wants me to be more dynamic, which I prefer – so Marcus is the same, dynamic as well. ‘We have a lot of running in us, we try to make actions or give the final pass and we score goals. It’s been nice playing with him. I think when we played against Southampton, he played up front with me, and it made it so much easier for me.’
