Manchester City may have to break the defender transfer record in order to acquire Leicester City star Ben Chilwell, according to the Telegraph.

The current world record for a defender is the £75m Liverpool forked out for Dutch centre half Virgil van Dijk in January of 2018.

As per the report from the Telegraph, Chilwell is seen as either a replacement or back-up to Benjamin Mendy who has spent much of his City career on the injury table.

Apart from a loan spell at Huddersfield, Chilwell has spent his senior career plying his trade at Leicester.

The up and coming full-back has now played 81 games across all competitions for Leicester, in which he has scored one and assisted six.

Under Claude Puel, it may have been pretty easy to coax Chilwell into joining the Citizens.

However, the Foxes have recently undergone a change of management which saw Brendan Rodgers return to the Premier League.

Rodgers has taken charge of just one Leicester league game, in which they lost 2-1 vs Watford.

Despite this, Chilwell seems enamoured with his new boss and has questioned why any Leicester player would want to leave:

“He [Rodgers] could have stayed in Scotland and won trophies, but he’s come here because he believes in the squad.

“He thinks over the next few years we can be challenging in Europe, and he can improve us.

“There’s no reason why any of us should move on. I’ve never seen it so energetic around here. Everyone’s happy to see one of the biggest managers in the world coming to the club.”As quoted
