Jurgen Klopp has revealed why he refuses to touch the famous Liverpool sign above the Anfield tunnel.
The Liverpool manager gave Major League Baseball star Francisco Lindor a tour of the club’s stadium in a video published by COPA90 on YouTube; showing his fellow New Balance ambassador such sights as the dressing room, and the dining suite, his favoured spot.
“I always take 15 or 20 minutes sitting here after the game,” said Klopp
“Three or four chefs here cooking food, perfect meat, perfect fish. Everything you’d want after a game.
“The players eat pasta as well. We all sit around, it’s a real social place.”
The German gaffer would go on to show the Cleveland Indians shortstop the “This Is Anfield” sign.
“I touched it [the sign] when I was manager of Borussia Dortmund but we lost 5-0.
“I will start touching it when Liverpool have won something.
“This is a really big club and the history is a mountain.”
Klopp will be hoping that is at some point towards the end of the current campaign, with his troops still in contention to win two trophies: the Premier League and the Champions League.
Tour guide Klopp then ventured pitchside, pointed at the Kop, and said:
“That’s the most famous stand in the world: The Kop. Fans stand, they are very traditional. They have songs for different players.
“I will stand there when I retire.
“I always wanted to stand one time at Dortmund in the Yellow Wall and so far it has never happened because I was too short of time. But I would do exactly the same here.”
The video was filmed ahead of last weekend’s Merseyside Derby, a game which ended goalless as Liverpool slipped to 2nd in the Premier League table, a point behind title rivals Man City with nine games to go.
The Reds still have the likes of Spurs and Chelsea to play – both at Anfield – while they lock horns with Bayern Munich next Wednesday in the Champions League.
