Former Manchester United manager David Moyes – yes he did actually manage the club – has revealed the player he could have signed upon his appointment at Old Trafford back in 2013.
Gareth Bale.
Moyes, who replaced the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, attempted to lure the Welshman – then at Tottenham – over to the Red Devils, only to lose out to Real Madrid who paid out a then world record fee of £85.1 million.
Instead, the Scot signed Guillermo Varela, who made just four appearances before disappearing off the radar.
Ah, what could have been for United, who have infamously failed to win the Premier League title in the post-Fergie era.
“I tried to make him [Bale] to be my first signing at Manchester United,’ Moyes told BBC 5 Live Sport.
“I thought he looked a Man Utd player all the way. His style, the way he portrayed himself, the way he played, and I think he’s a massive leader to Wales, and a top top player.
“He’s having a tough time at the moment [at Real Madrid] but I think he needs to be given a bit of confidence, and he’s got to do a little bit more himself through assists and goals. But I’ve got to say he’s had a great career at Real Madrid, and I think his career will continue then.”
Bale would go on to accumulate a staggering four Champions League trophies, La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de Espana amongst other honours in a Los Blancos shirt. However, his future at the Bernabeu is currently shrouded in doubt, and he’s widely expected to depart in the summer.
Man Utd just so happen to be the favourites to at long last secure his services, while Liverpool, and former club Spurs could be potential destinations.
