Kibuye is the largest open-air market in Kisumu and attracts about 20,000 people on its market days.

City Manager Doris Ombara stated that once complete, the project will improve hygiene and sanitation.

In 2018, the county government had allocated Ksh340 million to upgrade the market.

Re-designing the markets will end fire outbreaks attributed to electric faults due to poor or illegal connections.

For a long time, traders in the county had complained of operating under difficult situations.

The city’s streets had been taken over by the more than 10,000 hawkers thereby disrupting business in the town.

“Once the markets are complete, I intend to relocate most hawkers to those markets,” Doris disclosed.
