UK to surrender Ethiopian emperor’s lock of hair after 150 years

Longtime historical justice is to be witnessed following the National Army Museum in the UK, agreement to return to Ethiopia a lock of hair belonging to Emperor Tewodros II, after more than 150 years.

Emperor Tewodros committed suicide rather than surrender to British forces at the battle of Maqdala in 1868.

The development is a significant step in the country’s long fight for the return from UK of plundered ancient artefacts.

In April 2018, Ethiopia upped the campaign for its artefacts stolen by British troops to be returned as part of a wider campaign to repatriate important articles of the country’s history sitting in museums overseas.

The British ransacked the emperor’s fortress, deploying dozens of mules and camels to carry off treasure.

Ethiopia has been campaigning to have the artefacts returned.

They also want the remains of Emperor Tewodros’s son, Alemayehu, returned from Windsor castle to Ethiopia
