Spurs monitoring young Danish attacker on the rise

We’re at the part of the great football transfer rumor cycle where we start to see reports of various clubs “keeping tabs on” or “monitoring” certain players.

These aren’t necessarily statements of intent, but more just suggestions that clubs are casting a wide net looking for potential targets. These may or may not turn into concrete interest, but they sometimes give an impression of the kinds of players football clubs are looking at.

The newest one for Tottenham Hotspur is Denmark international and Copenhagen midfielder Robert Skov. In a Sky Sports EXCLUSIVE, former Spurs beat writer Lyall Thomas says that Spurs are one of a few clubs that is keeping an eye on the right sided midfielder.

Skov, 22, is something of a minor European sensation in the Danish Superliga — he’s scored 23 goals this season in all competitions, 22 in the league and 1 in the Europa League. He’s also a decent distributor of the ball, with a G+A-PK/90 of 1.09. He’s a Danish youth international who just missed the cut for Denmark’s squad in this past summer’s World Cup, and hasn’t yet earned his first senior cap.

That’s the good news. However, while he’s obviously got some talent it’s a little hard to guess at how well goal scoring prowess in Denmark translates to a top Premier League club competing in the Champions League. It’s the Danish league, so it’s hard to find advanced stats for his production as well.

Lyall Thomas says in the Sky report that Spurs are on the lookout for another wide midfielder who can cut inside and score from the right side of midfield; Spurs are one of a few Premier League clubs keeping an eye on him along with the three Ws — Watford, Wolves, and West Ham.

Skov looks like an interesting prospect, and it’s not hard to be impressed by scoring 23 goals in a season, no matter what the league. He’s young and presumably cheapish and might be worth a flyer if Spurs go into rebuilding mode this summer. Naturally, Spurs have more pressing needs than a young attacking midfielder, but transfers almost never happen in descending order of importance.

It’s hard to say whether Skov is an upgrade on someone like Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, though at the right price it could make sense to take a swing for him, or someone that fits his profile.
