Save Lamu from greedy land grabbers,ANC Leader Musalia Mudavadi tells Uhuru

The unacceptable activities by a manipulative land-grabbing cartel working with government proxies in Lamu pose a more serious security risk says Amani National Congress(ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi.

He said it was unfortunate that the Lamu people have suffered for long on matters to do with land grabbing and land ownership, adding that cartels working with some government officials are to be blamed.

” This land rip-off is the handiwork of a ruthless cartel that is working in cahoots with some state officials in both the National and County Governments” Mudavadi said.

“One is allowed to wonder whether President Uhuru Kenyatta is aware of these goings on or not. Significantly, the cartel behind this scheme and its proxies are manipulating Article 245 of the Constitution to illegally declare a clandestine curfew and apply inhuman scotched-earth starvation measures to forcefully evict residents in parts of Lamu from their land, as part of the scandalous land grab” he further explained.

Musalia also urged the President to act urgently to diffuse the looming threat of ethnic conflict in Lamu. Hiding behind smokescreens of Al Shabaab and sundry scapegoating will not do.

Land is still the cause of many conflicts in Lamu County and the fact that most of the land was classified as public, has made it hard for locals to acquire title deeds to claim ownership.

In 2015, the national government revoked over 500,000 acres of land belonging to 22 ranches in Lamu which were said to have been irregularly acquired.
