How Alfred Mutua is using crude means to stop Sand harvesting

Truck drivers who operate within Machakos County have Monday protested over increased cess they say is unmanageable.

The protesters barricaded the busy Nairobi Mombasa road for hours causing a snarl up that have lasted for three hours.

The county government has increased cess paid by the trucks ferrying sand from sh 520 to 1500per for a 6tonne lorry per trip

10 tonne lorry levies increased from sh850 to 3000 and a trailer to pay sh3200 from sh 1800.

Carrying placards, the protesters accused county of hiking the levies without carrying due diligence saying it will kick them out of business.

Police officers drawn from Athi River were forced to use teargas to disperse the protesters restoring free flow of vehicles.

The increased levies announced by the county take effect from Monday night.
