Liverpool would have a better chance of winning the Premier League title if they weren’t in the Champions League according to Gary Neville.
The former Manchester United defender turned Sky Sports pundit says Jurgen Klopp’s team would benefit from fewer games as they look to oust Manchester City in the race for the title.
Yesterday, Liverpool were held to a draw in the Merseyside derby and afterwards Jurgen Klopp was spiky in his press conference when asked about why his side couldn’t get the better of their neighbours.
Liverpool now turn their attention to the Champions League round of 16 second leg tie against Bayern Munich. The first game at Anfield ended 0-0 meaning the Bundesliga side are now fancied to progress. But that wouldn’t be such a bad thing for Liverpool says Neville.
“I’ve always thought that for Liverpool to win the league they have to have a clean fixture list” he revealed on the Sky Sports podcast. “I’m going to say it… go out against Bayern Munich. That seems like madness. You can’t play to lose a game. But actually, I think it will be in Liverpool’s favour if they can have a clean run.
“Because they can get everybody fresh, prepared for the rest of the season. City have got FA Cup quarter-finals, semi-finals potentially. Liverpool could go four or five points in front, that’s tough to pull back in the closing weeks, and that’s an advantage. I do think it’s 50-50 still, irrespective of what happened (against Everton).”
Liverpool have drawn five from their last seven games in all competitions allowing Manchester City to claw back what at one stage looked like an insurmountable lead.
