Long-term Liverpool and United target on terms with Bayern

Liverpool have been dealt a huge blow after their long-term target Timo Werner came to personal terms with Bundelsliga champions, Bayern Munich.

Bayern have however not reached an agreement with Werner’s current club RB Leipzig.

Liverpool’s interest in the German international has been well-documented, with former teammate Naby Keita stating in an interview with ESPN that, “We played really well together at Leipzig, and he was one of my best mates.”

“It’s clear: Should he move, then I ask Timo to join us here at Liverpool.”

Sadio Mané, once of Leipzig’s sister club RB Salzburg, was similarly full of praise for the striker, and said, “I like his style of play. Very forceful, good finish[ing], always giving it 100 percent. If he wants to join us, we’d welcome him to our team.”

There is no doubt that the acquisition of Werner would’ve been a valuable one for Jurgen Klopp’s side, with the striker offering a more traditional striking alternative to Roberto Firmino.

The forward’s injury against Manchester United last weekend highlighted how much we need other attacking options, especially with such a congested fixture list and the possibility that our world-class offence has off-days. Though he still shows some semblances of his old self, Daniel Sturridge simply doesn’t have the quality or physical attributes required to fill Bobby’s boots.

If Werner accepts this move to Bayern, it could be a big blow to Liverpool’s summer transfer window plans. We will potentially have to start looking at other solutions, such as Eintracht Frankfurt’s Luka Jovic, or even look to promote Rhian Brewster to the first team upon his return from injury, should he do well in the pre-season friendlies.

Either way, a player of Werner’s calibre, coupled with his admiration by current Liverpool players, would have made him a perfect attacking option for Klopp. There’s still time to swipe him from under Bayern’s noses, but it’ll take another Michael Edwards masterclass to do so.
