After the assassination of High Court advocate Robert Chesang, police who visited the scene mentioned it was a classic operation that might have involved state operatives.

This drove in fear that there are dangerous men out here with sophisticated weapons in the hands that could be used to perform very many dirty deeds if guns are not regulated.

This has been proved by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi’ during the guns vetting process.

A senior Kenyan strode into a guns surrender venue with at least 30 deadly firearms, including 18 high calibre assault rifles.

Interior Cabinet secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i and other senior State security officers stared in disbelief with their mouths agape as the prominent personality, whose name they declined to divulge, unpacked and displayed his collection — 10 shotguns, 18 assault rifles and a handful of pistols and revolvers.

“I want to caution some people holding semi-automatic and machine guns which under the law are supposed to be held by Kenya Defense Forces among other specialised forces,” said Matiang’i.

He said lack of following the law in issuing the licenses allowed “ such proliferation of speacilised firearms in private hands.

The moratorium for people with fake licences or in possession of firearms without licences ends on March 7. Matiang’i said “there shall be no extension even for an hour.”

Police will launch a crackdown on those with illegal firearms after the vetting ends.
