Grisly head on Collision sends 3 Diplomats to ICU

Three Ambassadors to Kenya are now nursing serious injuries in the Intensive Care Unit after they were, on Tuesday evening, involved in a grisly road accident along Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.

The three, Zambia ambassador Brenda Mudenda, her Botswana counterpart Duke Lephoko and Joseph Guttu, a High Commissioner of Zambia were heading to Nairobi after a seminar when the accident occurred at Lukenya area.

According to Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua, who visited them at Machakos Level 5 Referral Hospital, their vehicles were being led by a police car but as they were navigating traffic, an oncoming lorry did not give way leading to a head-on collision.

There was an accident, a head-on collision, between the vehicle of the Dean of the African Group that was carrying the Zambian High Commissioner. Her vehicle was involved in head-on collision and the vehicle behind with the Botswana Ambassador was also involved,” stated Mutua.

Mutua, however, confirmed that the three, together with another diplomat from Zambia, Kama Wasa Kaluwe, were out of danger after undergoing major abdominal surgeries at the facility.

“The patients are now being stabilized in the new Machakos hospital ICU. They will require more surgeries later after their physiology improves.

“Though now a bit stable, the diplomats’ situation is still classified as critical and we pray for their recovery. My Government of Machakos will do all it can to save their lives and return them to good health,” revealed the governor.

Ms Mudenda experienced abdominal and chest pains, Lephoko had leg injuries, Kaluwe sustained abdomen injuries and fractured right leg and Guttu had a fractured leg and bruises on the left arm.

According to the police, the truck driver, Joseph Giraranga, however, escaped unhurt.

The vehicles, which were badly damaged, were towed to the police station and are awaiting inspection.
