The FA are investigating allegations that Manchester City paid Jadon Sancho’s agent a fee for his transfer from Watford while the player was still a minor.

According to a report by Der Spiegel, City paid Emeka Obasi a sum of £200,000 when the then 14-year-old Sancho moved to their academy in 2015.

Wonder kid Sancho joined City from Watford as a 14-year-old and has grown up to become a Bundesliga sensation with Borussia Dortmund and an England international.

Spiegel say the money was described as an “agent fee” in internal City documents, despite being nominally for “scouting services”.

The German magazine also claims to have a copy of a letter sent by City Sancho’s father in March 2015, laying out his salary, signing bonus and other financial numbers.

The report claims, however, that that same amount appears on an internal City table under an “agent fee” heading for the Sancho deal.

Both FA and FIFA rules state that agents are not allowed to represent players until the year in which they turn 16, and a Football Association spokesperson told Sky Sports News: “We can confirm that we will be investigating the allegations.”

A statement from a City spokesperson last Friday read: “In relation to the story published by Der Spiegel, and contrary to their assertion that Manchester City FC did not respond to their query – please see below statement which was sent to them earlier this week.

“You will have seen this statement before. However, it is important to use it in full, as each element is material, as we pointed out to Der Spiegel in our reply.

“We will not be providing any comment on out-of-context materials purported to have been hacked or stolen from City Football Group and Manchester City personnel and associated people. The attempt to damage the club’s reputation is organised and clear.”
