Gov’t dismisses claims of abandoning school laptop project

Recently, news going around clime that he Kenyan government had ditched he promised laptop project raising eyebrows on whereabouts of the set amount for the project.

Education Principal Secretary Dr Belio Kipsang has now come to defense saying that the Laptop project was one of the three phases in the digital literacy project, which remains on course despite the challenges it has faced.

The project according the PS is now in its second phase which is building of computer laboratories after a good number of schools were connected with electricity.

He told the National Assembly Committee on Education this morning that 20,000 schools have been connected to the national grid.

Meanwhile, Dr Kipsang has said the transition rate from Primary to Secondary School has increased immensely since the government established a multi sectorial initiative to mop up a number of students who sat last year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exams and had not reported for admission to form one.

According to the PS, the transition rate currently stands at 93.7 % but efforts are in place to achieve 100% transition.

He also told MPs that the ministry is working with vocational training institutions to achieve the target.
