Looming Sugar shortage as a cane factory closed in Kisumu

The country might be hit by shortage of cane sugar as the
National Environment Management Authority (Nema) shuts down two production plants in Kisumu.

Nema took the action after information came out that the plant was depositing effluent into river Kibos, which is a tributary of Lake Victoria.

Residents had raised a red flag over the factory while Kisumu Woman Representative Rozah Buyu said that the factory was helping locals on employment.

She however cautioned against dumping effluent into the river

Any manufacturing company must ensure they take all steps to ensure peoples’ health is not put at risk. On the other hand, if a problem has been identified, we must take all precautions to ensure a stop is put to any further risk on peoples’ lives. As a people, however, we must not be irrational so that we throw out a baby with a bucke
