KWS call for vigilance after Mt Kenya Fire

Kenyan Wildlife Service has today called on the public to avoid starting fires near protected areas.

The KWS gave an update in regard to the fire that broke out yesterday near a special campsite at Chogoria, Mt Kenya.

At around 3:30 PM KWS said that they were still fighting the fire and they have not yet determined the cause.

The Wildlife Service also appreciated the support from the multi-agency team, including @KeForestService , Mt Kenya Trust, @RhinoArk and local communities after the outbreak.

They also noted that they are conducting aerial surveillance to determine the magnitude of the fire and respond appropriately.

“Local community volunteers and the multi-agency fighting the fire are still on the ground as more aerial surveillance is conducted to assess progress. ” they added in their statement

They also informed that all the visitors to Mt Kenya are out of danger and Lake Eliis, Special Campsite and Minton’s zones passable.

KWS noted that the multi-agency team and community volunteers fighting fires in Mt Kenya have made considerable progress.

“The teams plan to continue with fire response tomorrow morning with field guidance from aerial reconnaissance team. ” the said

All visitors who had been trapped on Mt Kenya during the fire outbreak were safely evacuated and KWS revealed their plan to do another aerial surveillance later this afternoon to assess the progress of the fire fighting efforts.
