Manchester United host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday while hoping to continue their remarkable start under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a victory likely to make the Norwegian get the full time job.
It was a miserable day for the United supporters who piled in to the Anfield Road Stand on December 16 as that turned out to be the final nail in Mourinho’s coffin. He was sacked two days later.
But the circumstances surrounding Sunday’s game at Old Trafford couldn’t be further from those that surrounded the game last year and Solskjaer can show by correcting three mistakes from that defeat.
“Every single player has the attributes to give us something and the way we played against Chelsea shows we can cope without them,” said
Solskjaer ahead of the clash.
“We have got options, it’s a big squad, everyone is eager. They want to play in this game.
“Some haven’t played so much, so it’s a chance to step forward. If they don’t make it, it might be the same team as against Chelsea. Who knows.”
Meanwhile, Gary Neville believes that the United board will find it “impossible” not to appoint Solskjaer as manager for next season if the Norwegian leads his team to victory against Liverpool.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: “Two or three months ago he would have been hopeful of getting the job, but if he beats Liverpool on Sunday then I can’t see any way he wouldn’t get it.
“It shouldn’t be defined by one game but to beat Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and then Liverpool it would almost make it impossible for him not to get the job.”
