The effects of the Nairobi county government worker’s strike has been felt in less than a week after the worker’s entered into a strike.

The county is now counting huge loses in their parking revenue stream as workers strike entered day 11 on Friday.

Figures seen by the media revealed that the daily revenue collection has drastically reduced as a result if the strike.

On average, the county collects Sh1.2million but the figure had reduced to about Sh800,000 per day as of Wednesday this week.

County’s parking director Tom Tinega on Thursday acknowledged that indeed the workers strike had affected operation at City Hall.

When the strike started on February 12, the county collected Sh1.15 million.

The following day the amount went down to Sh996,400 and Sh967,800 for Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

“Yes, a lot of revenue has been lost in terms of parking because not all motorists have been paying their fees. Some dodge due to lack of enforcement team as there are no parking attendants and clampers on the streets,” Tinega said.

He said the revenue in parking fee stream also suffered when governor Mike Sonko reduced parking fees from Sh300 to Sh200.

The county was generating Sh1.6 million on average before the fee was reduced.

Parking fee is among Sonko’s five revenue streams with other being rates, single business permits, building permits billboards and adverts.

This affected the internal targets for the current financial year 2018/19.

The county’s target this financial year in terms of revenue collection for parking fees is Sh2.97 billion.

The agreement was signed in May 2017 and City Hall had promised to effect it last month.

More than 13,000 workers who are on strike mainly consisting of parking attendants, mortuary attendants, sweepers, cemetery workers, contractors, those who plant and cut grass and unblocking drainages.
