Pep Guardiola sent a message from himself and his players to the Manchester City fan critically injured after their Champions League win at Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday night.

The 32-year-old City supporter, thought to be from Greater Manchester, was hurt in a confrontation with Schalke fans at the end of the Blues’ 3-2 win in Gelsenkirchen on Wednesday night.

German police are seeking the fans involved and the supporter is fighting for his life in hospital.

“We knew the day after about the terrible news,” said Guardiola . “Our thoughts and best wishes from all of us are with them. Hopefully the police in Germany can resolve the problem and the fan can get well soon.

“It’s really tough news. The game was spectacular and everyone enjoyed it, but then this happened …”

Some City staff stayed in Gelsenkirchen to support the man’s family, where he is said to be in a “critical condition” with “an acute danger to life”.

Police said there was a ‘violent confrontation’ between two City fans and two Schalke supporters outside the away end at around 10.50pm.

The City fan was hit and fell to the ground, striking his head.

“Because of the fall the man suffered a severe traumatic brain injury,” said a statement by Gelsenkirchen Police.

They are working in conjunction with Greater Manchester Police.
